Az angol lányegyüttes Spice Girls debütáló stúdióalbuma, amely Japánban 1996. szeptember 19-én, az Egyesült Királyságban pedig 1996. november 4-én jelent meg a Virgin Records gondozásában. A következő két kislemez, a "Say You'll Be There" és a "2 Become 1" 53 országban érte el az első helyet. A „Who Do You Think You Are” című dal hivatalos Comic Relief kislemezként jelent meg az Egyesült Királyságban, dupla A-oldalas kiadásban a „Mama” című dallal, és mindkét dal bekerült a top 20-as slágerlistákra Európában, Ausztráliában és Új-Zélandon. A zenekar szülőhazájában, az Egyesült Királyságban mind a négy kislemez az első helyre került a brit kislemezlistán, és a Billboard Hot 100-on az album három top 5-ös kislemezt is eredményezett.

HÁTTÉR

1994 februárjában Chris és Bob Herbert, akik Chic Murphy finanszírozóval együtt Heart Management néven működtek, hirdetést tettek fel a The Stage magazinban, amelyben a következő kérdést tették fel: „Utcai okos, extrovertált, ambiciózus, és tud énekelni és táncolni?”. Az új zenekar eredetileg Touch néven futott, és egy maidenheadi házba költöztek. Emma Bunton csatlakozott utolsóként, miután Stephenson édesanyja betegsége miatt kilépett.
A csoport bizonytalannak érezte magát a szerződés hiánya miatt, és frusztrálta őket az az irány, amerre a Heart Management terelte őket. 1994 októberében, demók és táncos számok katalógusával felvértezve, a csoport turnézni kezdett menedzsmentügynökségeknél. Találkozni kezdtek producerekkel, zenészekkel és más üzleti vezetőkkel, köztük Tim Hawes zeneszerzővel, valamint Richard Stannard és Matthew Rowe írókkal. Hawes együtt dolgozott a csoporttal, és figyelemmel kísérte éneklési és zenei képességeik fejlődését. Együtt komponálták a "Sugar and Spice" című dalt, amely inspirációként szolgált a csoport nevének "Spice"-ra való megváltoztatásához. FELVÉTELEK

A csoportnak egy héten azután kellett volna találkoznia Eliot Kennedy producerrel, hogy elhagyták korábbi menedzsereiket, de a találkozót a Herbert család hetekkel a távozásuk előtt szervezte meg. Herbert címjegyzékének hiányában azonban semmit sem tudtak Kennedy hollétéről, azon kívül, hogy Sheffieldben lakik. Mel B és Halliwell a Heart Managementtől való távozásuk másnapján Sheffieldbe autóztak, és keresték az első telefonkönyvet, ami a kezükbe került; Eliot volt a harmadik Kennedy, akit felhívtak. Aznap este elmentek a házához, és rábeszélték, hogy dolgozzon velük. A többi lány másnap Sheffieldbe utazott. A következő hónapokban a csoport továbbra is találkozott producerekkel, új dalokat írt, demókat készített és új menedzsert keresett. Újra találkoztak Stannard és Rowe írókkal. Korábban, 1995 januárjában dolgoztak együtt a lányokkal, mielőtt távoztak a Heart Managementtől; ez volt a csoport első professzionális dalszerzői felvétele, amelyet a kelet-londoni Curtain Road-i Strongroomban tartottak.
Az első, Stannarddal és Rowe-val közös felvételen megírták a "Feed Your Love" című lassú, lélekkel teli dalt, amelyet végül felvettek és mastereltek az albumra, de nem adták ki, mert túl durvának és pikánsnak tartották a célközönség számára. A felvétel után a lányok valami tempósabbat akartak írni, ezért elkezdték írni az album főcímdalát, a "Wannabe"-t, amelyet kevesebb mint egy óra alatt vettek fel – főleg azért, mert a dalok egyes részeit már korábban megírták. A következő felvett dal egy lassú ballada és az album harmadik száma és kislemeze, a "2 Become 1" volt. A dalt a Halliwell és Rowe között a felvétel során kialakult különleges kapcsolat ihlette. A "Mama" című dalt a Spice Girls írta Matt Rowe és Richard Stannard dalszerző partnereikkel. Egy interjúban, amely a csoport és a duó közötti írási folyamatról szólt, Rowe Mel B-t nevezi meg a dal koncepciójának kitalálójaként. A dalszerzés során minden tag egy rövid versszakot írt a stúdió egy másik sarkában, míg a refrént a zongora körül, gitárral fejezték be. Ezután a producerek egy gospel kórust is hozzáadtak a dal végéhez, amelyet a csoport harmóniái töltöttek meg. Ők készítették az album utolsó számát, az "If U Can't Dance"-t is. 1995 májusában a csoportot bemutatták Paul Wilsonnak és Andy Watkinsnak, az Absolute néven ismert dalszerző és producer duónak. A következő alkalom egyértelmű volt; vagy folytatják a munkát a csoporttal, vagy szakítanak a kapcsolatukkal. Az Absolute mesélt Simon Fullernek a zenekarról, amellyel együtt dolgoztak, és megkérdezte, hogy fontolóra venné-e a menedzselésüket. Fuller megkapta a "Something Kinda Funny" demóját, az egyik dalt, amelyet a zenekar az Absolute-tal írt. Érdeklődést mutatott a zenekar iránt, kapcsolatot létesített velük, és úgy döntött, hogy 1995 márciusában leszerződteti őket a 19 Managementnél. 1995 szeptemberében a zenekar szerződést írt a Virgin Recordsszal, és folytatta debütáló albumuk dalainak írását és felvételét, miközben az Egyesült Államok nyugati partvidékén turnéztak, ahol novemberben kiadói szerződést kötöttek a Windswept Pacific-kel.
A Spice Girls teljes mértékben részt vett az összes dal megírásában. Különösen Halliwell volt egyértelműen ötletgazdag, aki a jegyzeteiből, jegyzeteiből és különféle firkálmányaiból álló könyvével érkezett a megbeszélésekre, amelyek gyakran egy dalszöveg, egy dalcím vagy akár csak a napirend kiindulópontját képezték. 2021. szeptember 1-jén a Spice Girls bejelentette a Spice újrakiadását az album 25. évfordulója alkalmából, Spice25 néven. A deluxe dupla album 2021. október 29-én jelent meg, és remixeket, demókat és kiadatlan számokat tartalmaz. Ezenkívül a 2 Become 1 kislemez verziója az album harmadik számaként szerepelt az eredeti albumverzió helyett. A CD-k A5-ös keménykötésű füzetben érkeznek, ikonikus képek gyűjteményével és hat Spice Girls képeslapkészlettel, míg az eredeti album korlátozott kiadású bakeliten és kazettán is elérhető. A Spice25 újrakiadása során az album ismét az ötödik helyre került a brit albumlista 7798 eladott példányával, miközben a hivatalos bakelitalbumok listáján a harmadik, a hivatalos fizikai albumok listáján pedig a negyedik helyre került.

KRITIKA

A Spice vegyes kritikákat kapott a popzenei kritikusoktól. Az NME-ben Mark Sutherland az albumot „egy tökéletes, csúcstechnológiás poplemezként” dicsérte, „olyan jó, amilyennek a mainstream valaha is lehet”, „az év néhány, ha nem a legjobb popzenéjével”. KISLEMEZEK

WANNABE Egy dal, amelyet a brit lányegyüttes, a Spice Girls, Matt Rowe és Richard "Biff" Stannard írt és producált. A dal debütáló stúdióalbumuk, a Spice első kislemezeként jelent meg 1996 novemberében. A dalt eredetileg Dave Way keverte, de a zenészek nem voltak elégedettek az eredménnyel, így a felvételt Mark "Spike" Stent keverte. A dance-pop dal szövege a női barátság romantikus kapcsolatok fölé helyezi. Azóta a női önrendelkezés szimbólumává és a csoport lányerő-filozófiájának legjellemzőbb dalává vált.
A "Wannabe"-t nagy népszerűségnek örvendett. Johan Camitz rendezte videoklipje sikert aratott a brit kábeltévé-hálózaton, a The Box-on, ami felkeltette a sajtó érdeklődését a csoport iránt. SAY YOU'LL BE THERE Egy dal az angol lánycsapat Spice Girls-től debütáló stúdióalbumukról, a Spice-ről (1996). A Spice Girls Eliot Kennedyvel közösen írta a dalt, miután a csoport 1995-ben kilépett a Heart Managementből. Később Jonathan Buck is dalszerzői elismerést kapott. Az Absolute produkciós duó által készített dal a dance-pop és az R&B hatások keverékét tartalmazza. Judd Lander szájharmonika-szólót is tartalmaz. A zenekar lemezkiadója, a Virgin Records egykor a csoport debütáló kislemezének tartotta, és a Spice második kislemezeként jelent meg 1996. szeptember 26-án.
